There was an interesting aspect to today’s rally in support of the people protesting for democracy in Iran.
News photographs played a big role in the way they connected their march with their counterparts in Iran.

It was heartening to see the power of news photography appreciated in this simple and honest way. Sometimes – especially in this current time when the newspaper industry is under such pressure – it’s easy to think that what we do is not appreciated.
There are days when I think it’s not even noticed.
But seeing these people passionate about their cause see the value in the straightforward, dramatic presentation of the events as they unfolded in front of MY counterparts in Iran gave me hope.

Great news photography is strong.

And its nice to see that some of us are noticing.

Thanks to all I met today – especially Javad Bagbani (above) – a guy who was demonstrating in Salt Lake City in 2009 and also in Iran in 1979.
