Advice on internships/jobs at newspapers

I’d like to get an internship at a paper and am looking for advice, two questions come to mind.

1. What options (internships, volunteer work, etc) are open to me, considering my relative lack of experience, my talent level and the general climate that newspapers are facing?

2. What do papers look for in an intern or staff photographer?

Anything other thoughts you all have is more then appreciated.

No responses and a one coin vote? I guess people are off for the weekend.

  2. I know, right?
At least I didn’t give it the coin.

  3. A good start may be the new Visual Student blog, which will give you an understanding what editors are looking for in interns: http://blogs.nppa.org/visualstudent/
