UNPA – Nine Years of The Best in Utah Photojournalism

unpa

For years Brian Nicholson has repeatedly suggested to me that we should build a website for the UNPA with every contest-winning photograph, essay, and portfolio on it, going back through all nine years of the contest. I would just nod and go, “Yeah, that’s a great idea,” and hope that he’d forget about it.

It was a great idea. We’ve had websites over the years, but they were always one-offs that didn’t link together, or were built in flash (our first site, all in flash, was killer in 2001 but it sure sucks now). We really did need one big site to honor the great work the UNPA has recognized. But the reason I avoided it was all the work it would entail. All the CDs and DVDs I’d have to dig out of the basement, all the winners lists to pour over, all the time posting it all up again. I just kept hoping Brian would forget.

Of course, I’m only writing this post because I’ve finally got the site built and the work of nine years posted. And it was as much of hassle as I expected, so now I’m going back to my life and have some fun in the real world for a bit.

While I’m out enjoying life, feel free to check out the work of our contest winners, who are: Al Hartmann, Alan Murray, Amanda Saslow, Ashley Franscell, August Miller, Beth Schlanker, Brent Stevens, Brian Nicholson, Chris Detrick, Chris Onstott, Chuck Wing, Colin Braley, Craig Dilger, Danny La, Djamila Grossman, Drew Godleski, Eli Lucero, Francisco Kjolseth, Garrett Davis, Grayson West, Jaren Wilkey, Jason Olson, Jeff Allred, Jim Urquhart, Johanna Kirk, Jud Burkett, Keith Johnson, Kevin Lee, Kristin Murphy, Laura Seitz, Leah Hogsten, Mario Ruiz, Matt Hatfield, Matt Houston, Meegan Reid, Michael Brandy, Mike Terry, Mitch Mascaro, Nick Adams, Nick Short, Paul Fraughton, Peter Chudleigh, Ramin Rahimian, Ravell Call, Rick Egan, Robert Casey, Robert Johnson, Ryan Galbraith, Scott Sommerdorf, Scott Winterton, Steve Griffin, Stuart Johnson, Tim Schoon, Tom Smart, Trent Nelson, Troy Boman, and Whitney Curtis.

You can see their work by clicking on the photo above or clicking here: Utah News Photographers Association (UNPA).

Clicking on the Portfolio button at the top of the new site will let you select winners by year or category. If you see an error on the site, please let me know so we can fix it. Some of the design is a little unpolished, but that’s low priority right now.

And for all you RSS-proficient people, you can subscribe to the RSS feed at the UNPA site to receive updates on next year’s contest and other UNPA news.
