
Rebecca Giles sits with her one-year-old nephew, Marquis, outside her family trailer on a cornfield in the small Mississippi Delta town of Midnight. Rebecca shares the small trailer in Midnight with four other adults and six children in her family. The family used to live on a farmhouse in the same location, but in the fall of 2007, it burned down. The owner of the land gave the Marquis’ father the trailer so he could continue plowing the fields for him.
This a photo from an essay I did in March of 2008 in Mississippi. The whole thing was kind of a disappointment for me: I quit half way through the trip. I regret it, but I did learn a lot from the trip and my failure. A short essay is here
