From the Archive: Last time I skied

In case you didn’t hear, Chris crashed skiing the other day. Hopefully he is feeling better, but a video has surfaced of the crash (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dezIVl_Pc8c)! Holy s@&!

With that, I thought I’d share a picture from the last time I skied. Pictures taken by my brother Justin Smith, shot exclusively on a Kodak windup disposal camera. The year was 2002, the location was Vail, CO.

I was skiing with my brothers and friends in back country Vail.(From left to right) Cousin Alan, friend Todd, brother Tim, friend Bob, and me in red. Not pictured is my other two brothers Justin and Keith. This was right before dropping into a bowl and launching off some huge man made jump…

Well, my brother was snapping pictures of everyone launching off this jump. What he didn’t know is that I would hit it a touch too hot (a la fast). His impeccable timing is that of the late, great Eddie Adams, managing to catch me upside down in midair with a disposable camera before landing directly on my head and being knocked out cold.

Ski patrol saved my life. (pictured is my oldest brother Justin in blue). I was out cold. From what I was told, I was skied nearly two hours back to main village of Vail. When I woke up in the ICU in Vail the next day, not only did I have zero recollection of what happen, but I had lost about three days worth of memory.

So remember everyone, be safe! Wear a helmet! I should have learned that by now. I’ve had four concussions – two which have included helmets.
