Immigracion

Had an assignment for the Spanish paper El Observador the other day. It was about a grandmother and daughter in law looking after two children whose mother had been deported to Mexico. The children are citizens but the mother was sent back earlier this summer. It is such a charged issue, but the other day I was in a meeting with other journalists and they were talking about the best way to report on immigration issues. Their consensus was that the biggest problem with the issue is that each camp, pro- and anti- have their cliched facts that are passed along and posted around and the faces and real stories of those at the heart of the battle are often never seen or heard. Faces to facts was their conclusion. Seems simple, but it’s amazing how often news stories and reports are lacking both.
