Someone commented about the noisy images from the old cameras that many newspaper shooters are still using. I put together a comparison between the Canon 1D Mark II N (old sensor technology) and a Fuji X100 (new sensor technology). I had similar shots at ISO 3200 from UVU the other night. Here are side by side 100% crops from JPEG files straight out of each camera…

That’s a big difference in quality, and keep in mind the Fuji is not even a pro camera.

Trent, check this out: http://www.petapixel.com/2011/10/22/walnut-and-cherry-wood-coverings-for-the-fujifilm-x100/
thanks for this Trent – makes it easier to see the disadvantage we are saddled with ….
Thanks Trent. Really felt it today with an Ultimate Fighting assignment in a dark gym with black ceilings and black padding all around. Would have loved to have had a higher ISO to work with. Even with the camera maxed out and stuck with a shutter at a 100th it was still a little dark and the movements were just too fast to make much of it.
Frustrating.
I had the same issue as I recently shot the Utah vs. USC soccer game and I was maxed out with my ISO. I was underexposed by 1/3 of a stop with a 320 shutter speed, but it just wasn’t capturing great stop action and there was too much grain to capture sharp edges to define the subjects that well. I was even shooting with a 300mm at 2.8. I’m getting rather frustrated because the sensor in my camera just doesn’t perform well in lower lighting situations.
Once in a while I have the opportunity to shoot with our Mark IV. It’s amazing how much better the photos can be for a night high school football game. Where I might be shooting at 1/250 second, f2.8, 3200, I just dial up the ISO on the Mark IV and shoot at 1/500 or 1/640. And the photos look better than my Mark III at 3200.
