Wildfire Aftermath

Lamont Christiansen stood on the charred remains of his grazing land in Fairview, Utah Friday, July 13, 2012, and told me he found several of his horses burned but alive in a patch of green, spared from the fire. A large wildfire spread into Sanpete County on June 26 and destroyed most of the 3,000 acres where Christiansen kept some of his 180 horses. 15 animals were lost in the fire and the rest are now spread around northern Utah on rented or borrowed land. The Humane Society of the United States arranged to have hay donated to Christiansen and his neighbors, who also lost livestock and land in the fire. Christiansen, who started raising horses about 40 years ago for lease to dude ranches and for use on movie sets, said he will ultimately have to sell most of his animals.
