Montana Horse Drive – An End to a Cowboy Tradition

I recently spent about a week completing an assignment for Reuters in Montana covering the Mantle family’s last horse drive. I also wrote the story that moved with the package. These folks are the one’s that supply the trail horses to the guides and outfitters in Yellowstone National Park and many dude ranches in the west. They are selling their horse ranch and transitioning to cattle. Not as romantic but much more profitable.

I would appreciate any feedback if you would like to take the time.

The full focus gallery can be found here.

The blog I wrote can be found here.

Cheers!

Oregon giving some big photo play

Oregon Live has begun running pics like The Atlantic and Boston’s The Big Picture. Maybe they have been doing it for awhile and I just didn’t know it.

Tonight they gave me some cool play I wasn’t expecting.

Check it out here!

Bam! Then there was light!

Too bad he missed the shot …

Interesting frame when another photog’s strobes fired.  I typically have a few unintended strobed shots in my take. It is just part of shooting on the floor. But this one I actually kinda dig.

Don’t let this happen to you.

I am in Colorado covering the US Alpine Ski Championships for the AP right now.

Before climbing up on the frozen course this morning I placed on my crampons.

But a few minutes into the race I heard a yell and saw a shooter flying down the mountain on his back. He wasn’t wearing crampons.

Then he was followed by his camera.

Moral of the story. Having the right gear to cover an event is more than just having the right lens and camera combos.

And yes, he was ok. He didn’t hit anything and eventually came to stop when the course leveled out a couple hundred yards below me. Probably shaken a bit.

Freestyle Ski World Cup

Finally getting around to posting some of the pics I liked from the aerials/moguls Freestyle Ski World Cup from two weeks ago on my website. Sometimes it seems that once it’s out on the wire I move on and forget to get the stuff I like on my website. I will try to be better about that in the future. You can find snow, crashes and art HERE.

Any feedback is always welcome. If I suck, tell me.
