About Bryan William Jones

Scientist, Photographer

Don’t Be That Guy…

Its how it goes… you get set up along with the 4 or 5 other photographers a few minutes before the start, checking that nobody is in anyone else’s sight line and “That Guy”® in the black pants, red jacket looks back at us, then jumps in front with his camera to get the action *right as the horn blows*.  We yell at him to no avail, he gets his shot and jumps out of the way just as the runners pass by him.

To top it off, I get chastised by some woman standing next to me for swearing under my breath at  ”That Guy”®

From Saturday’s Photowalking Utah event at The Leonardo.  Met up with some new photojournalist transplants from D.C. there.  Hope to see them here at Utah Photojournalism soon.  More pics on Jonesblog.

C-130J Production

I ran down to Marietta, Georgia a little while ago to do a photoessay on the production of one of the Air Force’s most important transport aircraft.  The thing I really liked about this particular assignment was all of the color in the scenes that once these aircraft are painted, are forever rendered in muted tones.  More on Jonesblog…

John Warnock at the UofU

John Warnock, co-founder of Adobe gave a talk at the UofU Scientific Computing Institute last night.  It was a great review of the early days of computer graphics and where the modern personal computer came from.  It was also intriguing to hear about the central role that the UofU played in the history of computing.

Sensor quality

Apropos of Trent’s noise post, I have been blown away by how far sensor technology is coming these days.  This evening I shot some images on a walk around Sugarhouse Park from my cell phone… A 5MP image from an iPhone 4, not even the latest 4s with a physical sensor the size of a pin head.  Crazy…  Pretty soon one might imagine multiple smaller sensors distributed on a larger surface and their individual images digitally composited and processed to make a better, higher quality image.  What will that mean for photojournalism?  We are rapidly approaching a time when the phrase, “images straight outta the camera” will not really mean what we have come to expect that phrase to mean.

New category, Füd?

We should have a category here about food, so now we do.  Its called Füd…  Not necessarily the pretty stuff, but we all make photos of the food we see on assignments.  Some of its tasty, some of it is not so, but it all makes for good entertainment and says something about the culture of photojournalism it seems.  Or not…

Riffing on the inaugural One Star Loser podcast, we need to figure out how to figure out a rating system… Something for the food, something for the photo.
