the day they overturned prop 8

Seriously, a rainbow at an lgbt rally?! Eeeerie. I don’t think we get handed perfect situations like this a lot, where you’re speechless behind the camera hoping terribly hard that you’re not screwing up and get the shot before that thing in the sky disappears. More on the blog.

Damon Conrow

Damon has been addicted to heroin for seven years.
In hopes of ending the cycle that slowly eats away at him, he pleaded up to a first-degree felony so he could stay in prison longer than the state asked, for his drug distribution charges. After several attempts to get clean, it was the only way he could think of to get away from the drug.
I spent time with Damon before he went to prison, back in January, and visited him a few times in Gunnison, where he currently serves his sentence. He’s gained upward of 30 pounds and looks healthy again — healthy enough for me to hardly recognize him when I saw him again for the first time back in April.
As I got to know him, the importance of his drug addiction faded behind a much broader impact of heroin on his life in general. All the lonely days in his dad’s basement. His inability to connect to friends and family. His withdrawal from a world he very much wants to be a part of and his desperate and unsuccessful attempts at escaping the drug. And through getting to know him my goal to show an addict’s life became a desire to show Damon’s life, with the addiction that’s wrecking him being a large part of it. A part of a lot more things I felt and saw when I spent time with him.

While the photos are ok, I think the video in this case tells his story best, so take a lookies. Also, the story in my opinion got terrible play in our paper, so I don’t have a pdf to show.

Video is here.
I also wrote the story, which is here.
More stills are on the blog.

screen brightness

i edit on a mac and then use the air card on my pc to throw photos online. the toning looks fine on the apple, but then on the pc (is that short for piece of crap?) they look WAY dark. i probably trust the mac a little more but i wonder if everybody looking at photos on a different screen sees them toned differently. is there a way to always make it look the same way – no matter the screen?

holi

i know, i know, i only post once in a million years, i don’t even know how to post anymore.
anyway. i’ve waited a year and a half to cover holi and it was such an amazing day out there. a couple of you have asked about the photos, so this is to let you know it’s up on the bloggies if you’re patient enough to wait until the slideshow loads.

everyone’s dream

Hey there, I was wondering if any of you know people who:
Dream a lot, talk or think about their dreams, have creepy, recurring, beautiful, meaningful dreams. Or people who sleep walk, have nightmares, dream-related sleep disorders, people who treat people with sleep disorders?
I’d love to talk to them. Even if you’re not sure they’re ‘dreamy’ enough.
Also, if you have any idea how to find those people, other than just a common medical sleep lab- i’ve tried those and they’re kind of hard to work with. But if you know of support groups or anything, let me know.
You can comment or send me an email off-list, to djamila.grossman@gmail.com, that would be really, really cool.
Thanks a lot!
