Go Cougs!!
This just in from the Trib’s Connie Coyne:
For those who did not see the photograph, it was shot from a distance with a long lens, meaning the photograph looked fuzzy.
From editor Nancy Conway:
“When we made the decision to go with this photo we were unaware of the father’s request not to run the photo or that Defense Secretary Robert Gates did not want the AP to release the photo. Would it have made a difference? I don’t know for sure, but I think not.
“What may have made a difference is if the soldier were local.”
Connie also quotes a Trib blogger. But why no quotes from whoever runs the Trib photojournalism department? What do you think about the photo, Trent?

Letter to the editor, Deseret News-
Great photo on the front page (Aug. 19) of the helicopter rescue near St. George! Congratulations to the photographer, Lt. Cory Pulsipher of the Washington County Sheriff’s team.

Letter to the Editor in the Deseret News:
Shocked.
Disgusted.
Sickened.
Horrified.
These are the feelings I had when looking at the front-page photograph of a husband and wife embracing in the immediate aftermath of their 4-year-old son being run over and killed in their driveway. Please tell me what your thought process was when deciding to publish this picture? Do you have children? Are you void of any compassion?
Shame on you for your utter thoughtlessness. You owe this family an apology.
Funny article in the Tribune this morning.
The Ananstasi guy in charge of photography makes a nice try but he don’t know his history.
AME of photo saying every photograph is scrutinized?
LOL!!

Reading the paper with my morning Wheeties and I caught this letter in the SL Trib:
I about coughed up my Cheerios when I opened the Utah section and saw a picture of two men in a lip lock (“Protesters smooch near LDS Temple,” Tribune , July 13). Some editor should be fired for having such poor judgment as to put that disgusting photo in your paper.
I have worked in the newspaper business so I can imagine the discussion that went on Sunday night at 10 p.m., right before deadline. Print the picture or not print the picture? Ultimately, it was the editor’s call, and she said, “Print it.”
Hello — this is Salt Lake City! In the future, please remember that this is not San Francisco or Greenwich Village.
I will most likely not renew my subscription unless I see some heads roll over that picture.
