About Michael Mangum

I'm a freelance photographer based out of Salt Lake City. News, sports, weddings, music, and portraiture.

My appreciations

So in regards to my last post I just wanted to say thank you again for all the great feedback. After having thought about it quite a bit and weighing everything, I decided to cut the leash and give it a go. This community Trent has built is completely invaluable for people like me, and I look forward to seeing you guys wherever I happen to self-assign. I’m still going to be shooting all my commercial/wedding/music/etc. stuff, but am very much looking forward to put my PJ hat back on.

To all, thank you, and hope to see you soon from time to time!

Questions questions

Hey everyone,

I’m at a potential crossroads right now. For the last couple of years I’ve known I’ve wanted to try and do photography instead of trying to get a full-time career with my degree in finance, but have not as yet FULLY committed to it. I had my time at The Trib (that did more for my shooting than anything could have), a brief stint at Pixels, and am currently working 4 10′s at jetBlue, and hating it passionately (not only do I not want to work at home, I couldn’t care less about the flight benefits.) Last night ZUMA Press emailed me and offered a freelance position to me. That a couple of opportunities have presented themselves is not to say that I should just dive in head first, but with my growing disdain for the day jobs and increasing opportunities, I’m toying with the idea of quitting all that and just focusing on the photography. I’m young and relatively inexperienced, and want to get some opinions from all y’all before I move forward in making any big decisions. Help? Advice? Insight? Much appreciated.

Smoke Bomb

The Portland Timbers supporters section certainly knows how to party, er something like that.

Panic! at the Dis….. Nope.

So I shot the Big Ass Show this year, and the main act was Panic! at the Disco….without their frontman Brendon Urie, who had been hospitalized for “malaria” (who gets malaria these days in the USA?). The band decided not to cancel their set, and had the bassist and guitarist sing a couple songs in lieu of their normal lead, then had some guest fill-ins (all local artists) including Neon Trees’ Tyler Glenn. Sad to say but I think he probably outperformed a healthy Brendon Urie. Nevertheless, I thought the photo was kinda interesting, seeing Tyler Glenn on stage doing his thing with a Panic! at the Disco backdrop behind him.

For those that tolerate rock, and were not there, you missed a pretty good day.

I hate coming up with titles

So I’m kinda debating this shot. The header produced Schulers second goal of the season. And at first glance I liked the relative simplicity of the photo and (sort of) clean’ish background (no signs, gaps, incontinuities (sp?), etc.). But then I began to wonder if the photo would have been better with some sort of reference: a goal post with a bit of net, and keepers hand, or something else. Also, best crop? Not?
Thoughts?
Grac.
