About Mario Ruiz

I've been shooting and occasionally writing for the Daily Herald in Provo since 2005. Graduated from BYU in 2006 in photography. I'll be leaving the newsroom in August 2009 to go back to school and get an MBA (we'll see how that goes).

My Last Day as a Professional Journalist

Here I am at Utah Lake State Park on my LAST ASSIGNMENT for The Daily Herald! It was great four years as a full time staff photographer. I honesly can’t think of a better job I could have had or a better way to spend my early career.

I’m heading back to school, for those that are wondering. I start the BYU MBA program in a couple of weeks (with a Caribbean cruise between my last day as staffer and my first day as a grad student).
I have made some great friends at the Herald and have had very VERY forgiving bosses and fun colleagues.
I’ve also had a great time with many of you at the D-news and Trib, thank you for your friendships and encouragement over the years. I will miss shooting alongside all of you.
Wish me luck as I start my MBA (Mario’s Big Adventure as Randy Wright here at the office put it). I’m always available for lunch when you’re down in the UC. I’ll see you guys in the papers!

Photography by 10-year-olds

www.learningthroughthelens.com

Last school year I organized a project with an elementary teacher in Orem to teach his kids photography. He had some money to buy his kids point-and-shoot cameras and they spent several months photographing their recess time in the playground. Some kids even took their cameras home. It was an absolute blast. I showed up every other week and talked photography to 10-year-olds. They were really into the whole project and were learning artistic and storytelling principles and applying it in their photos and in other areas of their learning. We also set up a show at the Orem Library and displayed their work for a month. I got 2 other Orem schools on board and funded for the 2009-2010 school year. If anyone is interested in being a guest lecturer please contact me at mario@marioruiz.com. Check out the link below:
