About T.J. Kirkpatrick

I am a photojournalist currently interning at the Deseret News. I recently completed an internship with the VII Photo Agency in New York, following several months of freelance work for the Associated Press in the Democratic Republic of Congo. A California native, I earned a B.S. in photojournalism from Boston University. I've worked at the Waterbury, Connecticut, Republican-American and interned at the Newport Daily News in Newport, Rhode Island, the Cox Newspapers Washington Bureau in Washington, D.C. and at the Harvard University News Office. I enjoy meeting people and sharing their stories. I'm interested in leveraging the power of photography to help humanitarian causes and spark social and economic development. When I'm not behind a camera, I can be found darting through city traffic on a fixed gear bicycle or experimenting in the kitchen.

God’s Square Mile

This isn’t exactly Utah, but maybe a few of you all will get a kick out of it.

I spent a couple days in Ocean Grove, N.J., also known as “God’s Square Mile”. It’s a neat little ocean town that formed from a Methodist meeting camp in the 1870s. (It shares a border with Asbury Park, for you Springsteen fans out there)

I shot a little essay on the town, which you can see on my website if you like.

thanks coach…

for turning what would have been a nice action shot at home plate in to a mediocre butt shot:

But at least there was some interesting light to play with:

chalk it up

Remember when you were kid, using chalk to draw stick figure cats on your driveway?

Esdee Cushing, at bottom, and Danie Tolman work on "Weeping Woman" as students use sidewalk chalk to recreate Picasso works during "Chalk of the Walk" at Alta High School in Sandy, Utah on Monday, May 17, 2010. T.J. Kirkpatrick / Deseret News

I guarantee these drawings are better.

stooping

I shot this a little while back, don’t think I put it up here.

I passed by a yard sale while biking around on a sunny day off some weeks ago, but what caught my eye were the beards of the guys hanging out on the stoop. Another one on the blog if you’re interested.

Mike breaks like the wind

…or it was just really, really windy at our baseball game.

I’m still shaking dust out of my hair.

Wait, is that…

…is that Walter Peck? or just some guy who saw the movie and wanted to look exactly like him?
