Beginner’s Luck

(Photo by Christopher Kamrani / The Park Record)

In college I always teased the staff photographers, saying I could “out-shoot” them at a sporting event. A couple of times, they lent me a camera to shoot some Runnin’ Utes basketball games. I shot a pretty cool photo of former Ute Carlon Brown throwing it down. That was my impromptu claim-to-fame.

But last Thursday I borrowed a camera because our photographer had a few assignments prior to a high school football game in Heber. So I drove to Kamas to shoot the first round 2A playoff game between Grand and South Summit. It was the last legitimate warm day of 2011 and the lighting was (pun alert) “picture-perfect.” If there was a sport I could get away with shooting, it would be football. I have watched many friends over the years (who are now pros) shooting football on the sidelines and simply took mental notes.

In the second quarter of South Summit’s 33-0 romp over Grand, I found an ideal spot between two team parents and saw Wildcats QB Matt Rydalch pitch the ball to junior RB Hayden Packard who broke the run toward the outside. The Grand safety was converging, and like my friends have so aptly described to me before, I saw the play through my lens. I shot Packard’s arm lifting, preparing to put on a pretty vicious stiff arm. It’s just one photo from a keyboard jockey, but I must say, it felt pretty cool knowing I got such a cool photo—and in focus, nonetheless.

These days, seemingly every one is a “photographer” or a “writer.” After this shot, I guess I could be interpreted as both, but I’m not. I simply got lucky and give credit to those I watched work their magic over the years.

Things you wished you would have learned in school.

Everyday post sans photos.
A reporter and I were recently talking about the things that we wished we would have learned in J-school, the big one on both of our lists at that second was knowing a useful second language. We both took French in school, French does not come in handy in Wendover Utah where we were having this conversation. So I started thinking about other things and skills I learned later on the job that would have been helpful to learn when I was still in school. So question goes to the audience what do you wish you would have learned in school that would have made your life as a photographer easier? To answer my own question I’d have to say learning to use custom white balances and proper iso usage- ie avoid the noisy isos.

Oh and second question, how do you post stuff via email- what is the email address for that?

Behind the Scenes of “Night Lights”

Two behind the scenes shots from Sawyer Pangborns  ”Night Lights” video.

Sawyer set up his tripod in the back seat of his car, with two tripod legs fully extended to the floor, with the shorter third leg sticking into the back seat where the seat belts come out. Then secured the tripod with bungee cords to the ground.

The D200 was then set to ISO 400, f/13, 5 second continuous exposures as he drove around Salt Lake City.

Seen This Morning…

Went down to the finish line this morning to see my wife and sister in law finish the 10k and look who I saw.

Also managed to see a very serious looking Scott working the finish line inspiring the Zazoosh guys comment on how *they* had the contract and who was that guy shooting the finish… I laughed upon hearing: “Someone should tell him to get outta there… Oh no, wait… that guy has a press pass.  Go tell him its OK for him to be there”. Sidewalk cafe photobomb

I totally stole this idea from Grayson and cobbled together a few images of the monkey photobombing on my Flickr stream in an effort to make myself laugh in the face of not getting a press pass to cover the *last* shuttle launch.  I am kicking myself as 1) I turned down a press pass several months ago because I thought I’d just pick it up later and 2) I just got my press pass and clearance emailed to me for the launch, but I’d have to pick up my badge at 5am tomorrow…. at KSC…  Even if I had my own Cessna Citation X at immediate disposal, I could not make it in time.  So, for now… I am licking my wounds and giving you: More monkeys photobombing.
