For the longest time I shied away from Instagram because I looked at it as a way people could take crappy photos, throw some funky filters on it and then call it art. Paying no attention to the craft of making worthwhile photos or even taking care to portray their subjects honestly and fairly.
Then recently an editor of mine encouraged me to give it a whirl because they had been using it in their own way and found a new love of shooting again and it would give them a way to just follow me and what I see through my days. They told me that I didn’t have to use what I called the “hipster filters” if I didn’t want to and to just play with it as I saw fit. So far I’ve just been playing with saturation, contrast and focal point.
What I found is that after putting a eyefi card in my camera to transfer the image to my phone, installing a photo editing program and beginning to play with the application I too had also began to fall in love with seeing light and making photos again in my off time.
Then it came to my attention I actually liked some of the photos I was making before I edited/ruined them for Instagram.
Like last night. I didn’t need to take my camera rock climbing with me but I did and actually made a frame I was excited about.
So with that said, I am eating my words and enjoying shooting again in my off time because I finally relented and surrendered my past ideals.
If you have any suggestions as whom I should follow on the app, please feel free to let me know.
