Lucha libre

100109-MCU-WRESTLER-111-web

I did my Monday Close Up for the Daily Herald on a local Utah County professional wrestler. This is not him, this is another wrestler “Paco” who is considered a  lucha libre.

I wanted to try on his mask when they were preparing for their big event last night in Murray.

I am thinking of quitting photojournalism to become a lucha libre. We’ll see how that goes!

Advice on internships/jobs at newspapers

I’d like to get an internship at a paper and am looking for advice, two questions come to mind.

1. What options (internships, volunteer work, etc) are open to me, considering my relative lack of experience, my talent level and the general climate that newspapers are facing?

2. What do papers look for in an intern or staff photographer?

Anything other thoughts you all have is more then appreciated.

New to Utah

Hello, Utah!

For those who don’t know me, my name is Patrick Smith; I was a freelance photojournalist based out of Baltimore, Md., but yesterday I accepted the offer for the open staff position at The Daily Herald.

I was born and raised in Baltimore and excited for the change. Not sure how I’ll deal not being in the city with the most murders per capita (hahaha), but I know I’ll love it.

Thanks to David Ryder (one of my teammates from the Eddie Adams Workshop) for showing me this blog, too.

Be sure to say “Hey” if you see me on assignment, and I’ll be sure to the same.

Also, if you have any suggestions on areas in SLC to live, or looking for a roommate for a month or two until I find my own pad, please feel free to e-mail, AIM or call me. That would be greatly appreciated.

Farewell, David Ryder

The Park Record’s David Ryder is leaving Utah on Friday for the Foundry Workshop in India and then ‘school’ in Seattle to ‘study’ stuff. His outgoing quotation ‘watermelon is just juice that you have to bite.’
