Re-election party

After the main part of Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker’s re-election party was over I found the mayor sitting alone in a quieter area of the room making phone calls to other candidates, I really liked the moment.

Overheard on the scanner: “three people shot in a shed behind a residence on 300 South”

After an hour or so of watching and photographing police officers search the house and the shed with guns drawn while the young lady at right sat handcuffed behind a car in the street, we finally got the story from the police.

Seems the woman had called 911 and said that three people had been shot in her shed. But when officers arrived, the family in the home had no idea what the officers were talking about.

They searched the shed, searched the house, no dead bodies.

Turns out the gal has a history of drug abuse and mental instability, according to the family. She was arrested for filing a false report.

While the police were searching the house, the grandmother sat in a chair on the sidewalk and chatted with one of the police officers.

I hate coming up with titles

So I’m kinda debating this shot. The header produced Schulers second goal of the season. And at first glance I liked the relative simplicity of the photo and (sort of) clean’ish background (no signs, gaps, incontinuities (sp?), etc.). But then I began to wonder if the photo would have been better with some sort of reference: a goal post with a bit of net, and keepers hand, or something else. Also, best crop? Not?
Thoughts?
Grac.

Matheson Courthouse Evacuation

The Matheson Courthouse was evacuated on Thursday as the Salt Lake City Bomb Squad detonated two suspicious packages on the steps of the courthouse using robots. Police were heavily restricting access to the area, completely closing State Street from 400 South to 500 South. I managed to grab these shots with a 70-200 with a 1.4x teleconverter.

St. George Tire Fire

I was driving near my work when I noticed a small brush fire burning. It quickly spread to a nearby pile of tires and took off. Just happend to be in the right place right time.
